Peter Drucker once stated, "The most important thing in communication is hearing what isn't said." That's because the silent signals of nonverbal communication tend to reveal underlying motives and emotions - fear, honesty, joy, indecision, frustration - and much more. The tiniest gesture, like the way your co-workers stand or enter a room, often speaks volumes about their confidence, self-worth, and credibility. And the way you sit, stand or look at others reveals more about your true intent than you may realize.

Professionals who accurately decode the nonverbal signals of others, and use body language that is aligned with the attitudes they want to project, gain a competitive advantage in business. And that applies to whatever business they are in!

- Learn how to accurately read body language by using the five "Cs" - context, congruence, clusters, consistency, and culture.
- Understand the messages people are sending you - from their heads to their feet.
- Discover how your nonverbal communication is enhancing or destroying your credibility.
- Learn to use body language that projects confidence and charisma.
-  Discover how to translate nonverbal signals across cultures.

"Given proper leadership, workers are resilient and resourceful people who can thrive on change, even when their world is turned upside down," says Carol Kinsey Goman. In fact, she says, "upside down is an exciting place to be." But modern leaders need to work smarter than ever to assure their organizations remain productive. This new edition, written primarily for leaders who must keep pace with the way a new work force thinks and acts, offers perspective on the
fragile art of employee motivation.

* Learn how corporate leaders communicate ahead of change to build
employee savvy and support.

* Discover how some companies increase employee commitment by
including workers in the strategy-development process.

* Understand the six characteristics you can use as guides to help
determine which employees will deal most successfully with change.

* Learn why people are reluctant to share what they know and how
knowledge hoarding can be countered to unblock the flow of
information.

* Find out what happens when employees are asked to transition from
"unconditional loyalty to the organization" to "informed commitment
to business success."

"This book is filled with so much wisdom that it should be required reading for all those who aspire to be leaders. I would pair it with Jim Collins' Good to Great as the two most important guides for leaders today."
Jon Masters, Chairman, Masters Governance Consulting

"Carol Kinsey Goman uses the insights of top corporate leaders to show how change-adept executives actually thrive in a changing business world."

GHOST STORY
A Modern Business Fable

Lying untapped within the workforce is a source of power that resides in the ideas and experiences of individuals. Once combined, this "cumulative wisdom" has the potential to become an organization's strongest competitive advantage.

Ghost Story is a business fable about the power of collaboration. The story begins when the heroine, Dot (short for Dorothy), becomes the newest member of a cross-functional team formed to solve a major corporate problem.  Intimidated by other members, and overwhelmed by the fact that the rotating leadership position will be hers the following Monday, Dot sits alone in the team's conference room Friday evening, commiserating with "her only friend in the place," a bonsai tree. When the tree starts talking back, the reader and Dot are swept into a fantasy world where Dot is again asked to lead a team. Although her team members are unique - this time they include a magpie who hoards information, a 5-and-a-half-foot tall index finger who blames her mistakes on others, a pig in an Admiral's costume who "protects" staff by keeping them uninformed, the 3-year old head of IT who speaks only "dribble", and a Martian who is afraid to contribute because he's an outsider - their reasons for refusing to collaborate are all too familiar. Dot's adventures in this parallel universe mirror her real-life challenges. By the end of the book, Dot learns why team members aren't telling each other what they know and is able to help them see the advantages of open collaboration.

"Captivating story with lots a characters that people will recognize and relate to. The messages are clear and powerful for everyone working in our networked society."
Nigel Oxbrow, Founder and Chief Executive, TFPL Ltd, London

"I am struck by how easy this method is to teach individuals what is not appropriate for effective team performance without offending them. At the same time, you insert the how they should be thinking and adjusting their approaches. I think that is the key value of this story."
Robert H. Buckman, Chairman of the Executive Committee - Board of Directors, Bulab Holdings, Inc., holding company of Buckman Labs

The Human Side of High-Tech

There are several reasons why I rate this book so highly. Here are three: Goman provides an in-depth analysis of HOW various high-tech companies are creating a decisive competitive advantage for themselves by attracting and keeping superior talent; she explains HOW virtually all other organizations (including companies) can do so also; finally, she explains why companies such as Lotus, Cisco Systems, Autodesk, i2 Technologies, and PeopleSoft are "still in the process of evolving."

Goman agrees with Debra Engel (former head of HR at 3Com) that it took four hundred years for business organizations to operate successfully in the Industrial Age. "We are only beginning to understand how to operate in the "Information Age." In essence, that is the challenge that Goman's brilliant book addresses with eloquence as well as insight.
